I'm trying to decide which zone to start in.

I prefer Borean Tundra visually, but Howling Fjord seems to be the unofficial Alliance starting zone. Has anyone else thought about where they're starting?

Borean Tundra has the bigger starting settlements for both Horde and Alliance. But I don't know if you could say that it's primarily one or the other.

I think the main difference is that Borean Tundra is fairly open and easy to get around, while Howling Fjord is a bit like Azshara in that large areas of the zone are separated by massive cliffs and gorges making it a bit more interesting imo, but harder to get around. The main bad guys in Borean Tundra are the blue dragon flight, while Howling Fjord seems to be all about the Vyrkul. The main horde presence in Howling Fjord is the forsaken (who seem to like architecture that evokes abandoned-town-gone-mad-scientist even when they're making brand new settlements). Other than a couple of minor camps, all the alliance bases you come across are human.

For my part I'll be starting in Howling Fjord simply because it has nicer scenery and more interesting lore. And I didn't see as much of it in Beta as I did of Borean Tundra. I imagine that it will also be the emptier zone seeing as you get there from Menethil where as the much flashier Stormwind Harbor will take you to Valiance Keep in Borean Tundra.

[Edit] Also, Carcosa will be in Borean Tundra so you know that zone's going to go to pot right quick anyways. Babies riding around on crypt fiends and who knows what else. Flee while you can.

If you are going for levelling speed/effeciency you should do both.

Visually, I like the Howling Fjord, but I enjoyed questing the Borean Tundra (DEHTA FTW!) more. I could do either, but will prolly see if the Tundra is a complete zoo before making a decision.

I really liked questing in HF. BT seemed rather boring to me. Also, almost all the quests in HF are area specific. You get a bunch of quests for a certain area. Complete then they send you to another area with several quests.

Yeah, nearly all zones in Northrend have well-organized quest hubs, much more akin to the way the SMV/Netherstorm quest hubs worked. If you do it right, you will hit 77 somewhere in Zul'Drak, which is also about the point where it's a nightmare to get around without a flying mount. Storm Peaks and Icecrown are basically unnavigable without one.
